The other day I was sitting around with some friends, discussing one of our favorite British mysteries, Doc Martin. During that conversation, one of my friends expressed how she was interested in visiting the actual town where they film the show. That had us looking for the answer to the question: Where is Doc Martin Filmed?
While a few sites try to offer up the answer, it doesn’t appear that any of them are conclusive in understanding where the show is filmed. After extensive research, we have learned that Doc Martin is filmed in Cornwall, England. More specifically in the town of Port Isaac.
Fans of Doc Martin have been flocking to Port Isaac for years, with many images and YouTube videos popping up from fan-tourists who want to capture their own mementos from the coastal town where Doc Martin is filmed. While I have never been there, I did take the liberty to research the best way to get there from the United States.
One way is to fly into London from the US and rent a car. It is only a 4 hour and 30 minute drive from London to Port Isaac, with some beautiful views along the way. If you don’t mind the drive, you can also take an extended route that goes along the coastline.
You could also fly into Plymouth and then drive 1 hour and 30 minutes to Port Isaac if you want to minimize your time in the car. Plymouth is the closest big city near Port Isaac.
Depending on how big of a fan you are of the show, you might want to choose the fly into Plymouth route, because while picturesque, there doesn’t appear to be a lot of things to do in Port Isaac outside of snapping photos.
As a US resident, I likely won’t be making the pilgrimage to Port Isaac anytime soon, but for those of you who do decide to make the trek, I recommend that you choose several other sites in Cornwall that you would like to see, especially along the coastline, so that you can turn your experience into a full day trip. While 9 hours of travel each way from London may be excessive for a day trip, flying into and out of Plymouth should work out well for day trippers.
